January 2009 Archives

This is an amazing documentation of Graffiti and Street Art from Tel Aviv filmed by Nir Wiess. The music titled "The Molten Core" by Aalborg Ambient Soundtracks adds a hauntingly beautiful presence to it all.

OUROBOROS from sam3.

Here's a recent video by the artist SAM3. It features some great stop motion that he filmed in Berlin back in September/November 2008 with music by Bijan Cheminari / Noh Zarbi from the album Eos. If you're into street art then you're most likely familiar his work. However, at this point, he's pretty much established himself as a gifted artist period... with or without the additional labels one might throw his way. Check out more of his work here: www.sam3.es

We've been waiting for something like this to come along. Streetartlocator.com is a community google map mashup mapping street art the world over. With street art being so transient, this could be a great tool/resource for both documentors and the urban tourist. Get to work!

Back in 2004 Banksy journeyed to Jamaica and as you might expect, left a little something behind. Four years and some months later the same Jamaican, Peter Dean Rickards, that revealed Banksy's identity several months back got the "brilliant" idea to remove the cement wall from outside a small pub on Mona Road.

Rickards is also the photographer whom documented the entire process and is now selling the photos (10 total) on eBay starting at $100,000 for the set. Here's where it gets even crazier... buy the photos and you get the wall for free (plus about $10,000 for shipping)! The photo above shows the piece in storage (with security, no doubt). The video below shows the dismantling of the art outside the pub. And after the jump Rickards explains how this all went down.

Bruno 9li just posted some new images from his solo exhibition "SUMA" in Copenhagen with Rojo artspace We Love Asbaek back in November. It's a nice treat for those of us that just can't get enough of his work and couldn't make the trek to what looks like a great opening reception.

Good Hustle, Ambience & Panthelion perform at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco Wednesday, January 14th at 9pm. Good Hustle has an small favor to ask of you... They wrote a song for a thousand voices, but there's only three members in the band. They were hoping you might help out by watching the video above, and learning the chorus in advance? You can jump up on stage and sing it with them if you bring a pint!

"Family First" opens tonight featuring works by Andrew Schoultz, Richard Colman, Sylvia Ji, Henry Lewis, Mike Davis, Cleon Peterson, Ian Francis, Hillary Pecis, Albert Reyes, Shepard Fairey, Shawn Barber, Jim Houser, Mike Giant, Rogelio Martinez, Adam 5100, David Choong Lee, Adam Flores, and AJ Fosik. The reception starts at 7 pm and goes 'til 11 pm at White Walls Gallery 835 Larkin Street, SF. The exhibit runs through February. Be sure to check it out. Some of our favorite artists are represented here.

Portishead's Geoff Barrow has opened The Friend & Co. a tiny gallery in Bristol with plans to show outsider art. With a capacity of about 3 people at any given time, there will surely be a constant line outside the door which will only add to the spectacle of the small.

We've often thought, (and expressed that thought but, as of yet, none has taken heed), that some of the years- vacant spaces in SoFA should be divided up into small, manageable footprints for indie artists and creators retail shops. Can you imagine about 20 of these cool funky indie owned galleries/boutiques up and down South First...it'd really be a somethin'!

Actions: What You Can Do With the City presents 99 actions that instigate positive change in contemporary cities around the world.

Actions: What You Can Do With the City “explores the thousands of examples around the globe of people reclaiming urban space through diy actions in order to humanize the failed urban realities around them. While urban action has become a hot subject over the recent years, the CCA has approached the subject from a broad critique that mixes 99 Actions done by artists, architects, designers, politicians, activists, athletes and most importantly average citizens.”
