“We love our country, but Bush and Cheney are taking us in the wrong direction”, said Terra Lawson-Remer, an organizer with New York City’s Operation Sibyl. “Bush lied about WMDs and Iraq, and he continues to deceive us regarding healthcare and the state of the economy. We can’t afford four more years of deception, miscalculation, and arrogance.”

Revelations that members of the Bush/Cheney Administration knowingly lied about supposed stock piles of chemical weapons and weapons of mass destruction programs in Iraq in order to justify a pre-emptive war exemplify a pattern of deception that has become a hallmark of this government. The same pattern of deception has led to tax cuts benefiting the richest Americans, the highest unemployment rates in decades while consumer confidence remains at historic lows.

“Engaging in creative, peaceful civil disobedience to hold our government accountable serves to revitalize democracy,” said Lawson-Remer. “Throughout history such actions have secured the right to vote for women, ended segregation, and hastened the end of unjust wars.”

“There is a real choice in this election. Everyone has a stake in the outcome,” added New York based Operation Sibyl member Adam Berenzweig. “Our action today was dramatic because the difference between a Bush and a Kerry Administration would be dramatic.”

All four climbers were arrested and await charges at the Midtown precinct. Operation Sybil is a group of young professionals and students who organized around this election to unseat George Bush. The group is named after the Greek oracle at Delphi, Sybil, who role was to expose truth to humankind.
