The Significance of One

With the recent disaster in Southeast Asia, it's difficult to feel celebratory. We wish for a new year of peace and harmony to each and everyone of you. There has been much written regarding relief efforts to the survivors of the tsunami, but I wanted to add one more less recognized effort by Kevin McDonald of Writer's Cafe that has made it easier for those wanting to use Paypal accounts (many organizations aren't set up to receive Paypal yet). He is collecting and forwarding all money to the AmeriCares Fund. In each one of us contributing what we can, together we can aid a country in need. Peace.

Shizzy's prank on poor Roger

shizzythumb1.jpg

Figured if I'm still laughing about it a week after I've read it, it's worth passing along. Says Shizzy "....here I begin a friendly dialogue with Roger Simmons, a brand new assistant in the human resources dept, hired just a few weeks earlier. This is the lowest level person I could find that still works in the office. I think it's so nice that the President and CEO of Starbucks International would send a welcome letter to such an unimportant person. Don't you?" Read it here.

The recently censored painting by Chris Savido is up for auction on eBay. "Bush Monkeys" was originally priced to sell at $3,500 before being pulled from a New York exhibit earlier this month. Bush Monkeys Over The Holland Tunnel

Artist Christopher Savido has been getting some press for the past two weeks after his painting "Bush Monkeys" was pulled from an art exhibit at the Chelsea Market in Manhattan. His controversial portrait of President George W. Bush (composed of smaller images of monkeys) instigated the 60-piece exhibit to be entirely shut down by the market's managers.

Anonymous donors reportedly paid for the image to be posted on a giant digital billboard earlier this week over the entrance of the Holland Tunnel, used by thousands of commuters travelling between Manhattan and New Jersey. Organizers expect more than 400,000 drivers to see the billboard each day for the next month. The original painting is scheduled to be auctioned on eBay; It had been priced at $3,500 at the exhibit opening.

Wall Street Bull

In the spirit of public art, I love this story....artist Di Modica placed a 7,000 lb bull, made of bronze, costing him $360,000 of his own money out onto Wall Street in the middle of the night back in '89 to "give something beautiful to young Americans" after the '87 crash. It's now up for sale with the condition that it must be donated to the city, and remain where it is... the new owner will receive a plaque certifying ownership as well as a tax deduction. Bidding begins at $5 million. Read about it here.

"In Sight: Out of Mind"

Back in 2001, San Jose lost one of it's cultural proliferators, Jim Vetter, in the wake of the Tech boom. Like many of us trying to keep inspiration alive in the Bay Area, his voice was drowned out by the growing economy as the cost of living became unbearable. Jim shut down his gallery 806 shortly before the collapse, packed up and moved to Sacramento where he launched SkyLab, a creative resource for youth.

SKYLAB's first project looks at homeless teens; "In Sight: Out of Mind" opens this Saturday, December 11, in Sacramento.

Read the article on the project Homeless teens tell their stories, by Will Evans from Sunday's Sacramento Bee.
