A.D. Downtown
Yes, it's true. After five of the best years we could imagine in a former iron works foundry throwing monthly art happenings, Anno Domini will be moving into the former Camera One Theater building on South First Street. Thanks to friends, artists, audience and city agency folks that believe in A.D., we have finally signed a lease for the new location to bring the gallery smack in the middle of the heart of the city.
It's a passing of the torch really... in the early 1970s there was no place in the South Bay to see quality independent or international films. James Zuur, Jack NyBlom and Dennis Skaggs, aspiring filmmakers and major film fans, used to make the long drive to Berkeley several times a week to see movies like Children of Paradise, 400 Blows and Casablanca. But after a few years the drive became a bore, and in 1975 they, along with two other partners, opened Camera One in downtown San Jose. We hope to continue the legacy of art and culture that these pioneers began more than 30 years ago.
So Barron's show will be the closing of the current location (what a way to go!). The work is coming in and it's intense, beautful and you'll never forget it. So come by his opening (06.03.05), meet Barron, get inspired and reminisce about the 55 exhibits showcasing hundreds of artists from around the nation and all those DIY performers that made the trek to SJ to share their talents. We should be in the new space by the fall to start it all up again.
And what's to happen with A.D.'s current space? Well, it would be a shame to lose an art space to gain one, so we're going to launch KALEID, a new gallery specializing in local artists. You'll be hearing more from us about that soon.

Sound Immersions
How often does one get a chance to say, "Speaking of Cadavre Exquis"? Well, today's my day...
I spent a good part of my morning today listening to a streaming broadcast of sound art from students of the University of Minnesota. You can tune-in to their 4-day internet Radio broadcast featuring field recordings/phonography through Memorial Day.
This is the first of three broadcasts over the next three weeks and is largely comprised of un-processed site recordings.
17 students made this broadcast, inspired by the Dadaist Exquisite Corpse technique. Each individual made a 60 second recording then handed off the recorder to another person who added 60 seconds and so on. Sometimes the microphone is stationary, revealing the locational perspective of the recordist. Sometimes it is a searching microphone, finding sounds and audio-images in the environment. Sometimes the recordists actively performed using found objects or their own body as an instrument.
3 additional tracks were later remixed from the original source footage.
The radio stream will be broadcast for 24 hours a day until next Tuesday and works with a dial-up internet connection speed or higher. You simply need a music program on your computer, any free player like iTunes or Real Player for Mac or PC will work.

Art as Clothing, Clothing as Art
The Richmond Art Center
Call for Entries: Dress: Art as Clothing, Clothing as Art
Deadline: May 31, 2005
This call is for existing artworks that address clothing as a sculptural medium. Projects should emphasize the condition of the body in clothes, informed by soft sculpture, performance and body-art precedents of the past 40 years. Works that can withstand contact are encouraged, as are projects that invite audience participation. The emphasis is on wearable articles and performances, centered on concerns of commodity and gift exchange, shelter, and self-identification as articulated through clothing. The exhibition strategy is based on the design of a bout ique rather than a gallery show, inviting visitors to abandon traditional notions of how to interact with art.

The C5 Landscape Initiative
San Francisco Camerawork presents The C5 Landscape Initiative, an exhibition featuring work by C5 Corporation, a new media collective based in San Jose, California. The Landscape Initiative is the culmination of three years of research and documentation of C5's performative expeditions into the landscape through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and big data analyses. C5 is interested in how people interact with data, and how data influences the way we interact with our environment.
The exhibition will include media installations that blend innovative uses of digital technologies to explore, navigate and map the landscape on both sides of the globe. Presented through work generated by database software developed by C5, this exhibition features digital photographic prints, fabricated sculptural objects, 3D visualizations and digital video. The exhibition will allow viewers to interact with C5's expeditions, while exploring our relationships to the land in a data driven world.
C5 artists include: Steve Durie, Bruce Gardner, Amul Goswamy, Matt Mays, Joel Slayton, Brett Stalbaum, Jack Toolin and Geri Wittig.
Exhibit on view: May 24-June 25, 2005
