Christine Benjamin

After three long, HOT days, the mural is finished and we're celebrating!!

Phantom Galleries presents:

Exquisite Corpse
Paris 1925 - New York 1993 - San Jose 2005

Over 60 local artists came together to re-enact "Cadavre Exquis," a parlor game of automation, chance and accident founded by the Surrealists in the 1920s.

Join us Friday, July 22, 2005
7pm - 10pm
55 South First Street (@ the corner of Post Street), downtown San Jose
Free and open to the public

Featuring music by Corpus Callosum.

There are two forms of this exhibit, one is drawings on paper (located at 55 So. First Street), the other is a 48' long mural (located at 50 No. First Street).

The game's origin was centered around words and poetry but was adapted to the possibilitiesof drawing, and even collage, by assigning a section of a body to each player, though the Surrealist principle of metaphoric displacement led to images that only vaguely resembled thehuman form.

It is in this spirit that these two exhibits celebrate the Surrealists' notion that creativity andgenius could be a shared experience.
