"There's Nothing Informal About It"

AlvarezBook.jpg

Maribel Alvarez , author of There's Nothing Informal About It: Participatory Arts Within the Cultural Ecology of Silicon Valley will be at MACLA to discuss her recent book on DIY art groups of San Jose and the surrounding area. (Anno Domini was one of the subjects of her book as well as many other worthwhile grassroot collectives.)

This is an important discussion that is vital to, not only the survival of arts in San Jose, but also to catalyst new models of support and participation. We hope to see you there!

She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona and a Masters Degree in Political Theory from California State University, and is currently writing a book on the artisanal labor and folklore of the “curios” produced at the US/Mexico border. >From 1996 to 2002, she served as the Executive Director of MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana, which she also co-founded. She is part of the faculty of the annual Leadership Institute of NALAC/National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, which trains young leaders in the Latino arts field. Sou-Movement-2/17

nOah, Ide

nOah & IDE have been working hard on a mural for the gallery on the back of the building for weeks now. IDE will be leaving us to return to Japan at the end of the month, so we're going to have a get together here at Anno Domini to send him off. We'll be exhibiting nOah & IDE's paintings, they'll be painting live all night, we'll have a Japanese rapper & VJ perform (Kazu & Kentaro) and DJs Cutso, Nui and Zico will be on hand to ensure excellent music.

Fri., Feb. 17th, 7:30-11:30pm
$5/door, $3/student ID

Sou-Movement group shot

Thanks to everyone that weathered the near-freezing weather to come out for the event. Here's a few photos from the night to peruse.
