Some of you recall the first time Devon Sproule came through AD with Davy Rothbart and Found Magazine's "We are Nighttime Travelers" tour in 2003. He referred to her then as "his best find yet!" We couldn't have agreed more. (Ask him to tell you the story sometime.) Later that year Devon popped up in Rolling Stone's Top 10 Critics, Top 10 Picks for her album "Upstate Songs."
Devon Sproule returns to Anno Domini on Wednesday, March 29th for an evening performance. She is touring with the talented singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, Joanie Mendenhall .

Professor Prawns is an emerging practitioner in the field of participatory performance art, with a background in competitive improv theatre, weird performance art and slam poetry. He suffers from a condition known as shapeshifting-into-bunched-beets-and-leading-people-in-national-geographic- responsive-readings-and-freestyling-rhymes-while-chopping-wood-in-a-speedo-itis. The only known cure for this rare disease is sharing his unique pathologies with others in the form of a highly interactive performance format called: Learnology.
Mark Silverman is a songwriter and a comedian who lives in San Francisco. He's been featured on National Public Radio and Dr. Demento, and he's played hundreds of shows in the U.S. and the U.K. Mark is single. He is also tall and handsome, he makes lots of money, and he can spit real far. Mark thinks it's odd that people who write their own bios are forced to refer to themselves in the third-person.
Laura Boo hails from the frosty east (Montreal) and now lives in the soggy west (Vancouver). She's a renowned fag hag, a relentless workaholic and a delightful deviant searching endlessly for that place where romance and the mundane realities of passion collide. Publisher of 'zines and chapbooks, producer of video, installation, conceptual performance art and queer dance parties, she is also an activist, educator and closet academic. Her (anti-)poetry explores the personal and political through playful comedics and painful self-exposition. Her brain-children include the media-frenzy-inducing Team Makeout performance series and the chapbooks "Idiotology" and "Pathetic".

Save the Merc!
Recent days have brought dizzying change to the San Jose Mercury News. In quick succession, the Mercury's owner, Knight Ridder, was sold to the McClatchy Co. which has announced it intends to sell the Mercury News.
The pending resale puts the paper's ability to cover the community at risk. An owner more interested in increasing profits than in fulfilling the paper's responsibility to the community likely would impose severe cutbacks in news coverage.
Please join the employees of the Mercury News and voice your support for preserving this vital civic institution.
We encourage you to visit the Save the Merc website and Sign the Support Statement.

Psychotronix Film Festival
KFJC's Psychotronix Film Festival shows only 16mm films, an archaic medium that brings us wondrous images of a near forgotten time. Antiquated commercials, neglected cartoons, previews from old movies, various short subjects which may have been intentionally educational then that are now just unintentionally funny. These films are the vox populi, not the master's voice, made by people looking for a paycheck, not immortality. The Psychotronix wants you to experience something not old enough to be precious nor young enough to be contemporary. A black and white world of irradiated, enormous insects, big hair, large cars, and happy people satisfied by the mild, mild, mild taste of tobacco. When the only worrisome foreign ownership was the prevalence of Canada Dry soft drinks.
An invisible art, this collection of films would never be celebrated by the academy. Monsters and clowns, the goofs and the gallants, products long gone and quaint notions of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. All this and more at the Psychotronix. Free snax, (with an "x") and door prizes. There will also be surprise guests as well as a roomful of people who like the same things you do- and how often does that happen?
These are films with never-weres not has-beens, though that doesn't mean that they are without talent, even if only a talent to amuse, at this point. You will want to see the Psychotronix- for the history, for the hysteria, for the histrionics. You'll laugh and wonder how it was that this corner of culture could ever have escaped your attention. See the shocking, eye-staggering truth, the follies and foibles, the catchy tunes, and the tidal waves of terror that are all part of the Psychotronix Film Festival.
Before you get too smug, remember that the distance of time allows us to see a culture's conceits. How will the future look at you, look at us? The future is now and the Psychotronix Film Festival is just weeks away. Previous Psychotronix have sold-out, so for best seating, get there early. Doors open at 6:00 PM.
The KFJC Psychotronix Film Festival
When: Saturday Night March 25 7:00 to 11:00 PM
Place: Room 5015 on the Foothill College campus, Los Altos Hills, El Monte exit off of Highway 280
Park in Parking Lot #5 right before the Brown Trailers and follow the signs
$5.00 Donation to Benefit KFJC and $2.00 for Parking (bring 8 quarters)

Cindy Chavez for Mayor
We went out to Cindy Chavez's campaign kickoff celebration yesterday. It was inspiring to see the incredible support from such an amazingly diverse community (our neighbors that we seldom see) in attendance. Councilwoman Chavez speaks from the heart, and enters the race with a background of doing-ness that echoes louder than any political jargon you'll hear in the coming months. Most of all, for us, she has been one of the most vocal evangelists regarding the importance of arts and culture in San Jose (or any city that desires greatness) for years.
To all of us that live, work and play in the city of San Jose, choosing our next mayor is truly one of the most important political decisions we'll make this year. We encourage you to take the city's future in your own hands and arm yourself with knowledge so you can make a decision you'll be proud of when we all look back on our great city and remember this time in the years to come... The time when we all chose to change the world from our own little corner of the globe. We should desire nothing less.

A Virtual Call for Entries
Ars Virtua Gallery and New Media Center is looking for works for our inaugural show. The theme of this show is "The Real" and will be exhibited on the grounds of Ars Virtua which is located on the border of Butler and Dowden in Second Life.
They are looking for 2D media, video and sculpture (including scripts) produced within the 3D engine. All representable media will be accepted for consideration but artists are cautioned to be economical with the number of prims used in sculpture.
For too long "the virtual" has been supplanted by "the real" in the realm of communication and entertainment. We recognize that there is no need for replacement, but for extension. We see that 3D game engines are creating new environments with new rules that are just as tangible as the old ones, but on new terms. Education and art have been waking up to value of simulation as it relates to and does not relate to campus and museum life. The value of simulation or perhaps the threat of it occurs when simulation begins to trump that which it is simulating. That is the purpose of this exhibit, and though it does not make every exhibit in space-time useless or passé it does attempt to offer a wholly electronic alternative, an "other" real.
"The Real" will be juried by a group of artists from the CADRE Laboratory for New Media.
Please submit files via email in the following formats:
jpeg - no larger than 400x300;
mp4 - no larger than 1mb;
descriptions- no more than 250 words
All submissions and requests for more information should be sent to gallery [at] ArsVirtua.com
Letter of interest due: March 14
Opening: April (TBA)
