Intersection for the Arts 2007 Auction Fundraiser - SF's oldest alternative non - profit art space Intersection for the Arts is in (or rather IS) the heart of the Mission District. With Theatre, Dance, Gallery, Literary and artist resources, they do a hell of a job for local artists. This year's auction has over 50 artists many of whom we greatly respect and you'll recognize including: Kathy Aoki, Sandow Birk, Victor Cartagena, Carolyn Ryder Cooley, Binh Danh, Matt Gonzalez, Xylor Jane, Chris Johanson, Aaron Noble, Andrew Schoultz, and Deth P. Sun.

GOOD Magazine covers 11 Spring Street in NY

Richard Avedon at Cantor Arts Center
In 1985 the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas first exhibited "In the American West: Photographs by Richard Avedon." Avedon had spent the years of 1979-1984 photographing oil field and slaughterhouse workers, drifters, mental patients, and waitresses; the results shattered stereotypes of the previously glorified inhabitants of America's frontier. Following its highly acclaimed tour more than twenty years ago, the project has not been seen in its entirety here in the United States. For the 20th anniversary exhibition on tour, 78 images, representing the project's most famous and important works, were selected. This is the final stop on the exhibit's tour. We highly recommend it.

Benjamin Henderson, circa 1982, San Jose CA. Ben is the former frontman for the San Jose rock outfit Delta Activity. He currently shuttles between solo acoustic storytelling and avante-garde jazz improvisations with his Good Hustle emsemble. Looking to release recordings and tour in both settings should make 2007 a busy and exciting year for him.
JoAnn Riedl’s deep, aggressive vocals and percussive, dirty, rock-guitar style hail from Milwaukee. "Her ability to switch from acoustic to electric in an intimate solo setting, along with her raucous, almost punk, approach, has set her apart from her peers with reckless abandon," according to Brian Barney and David Luhrssen of the Milwaukee WI Shepherd Express. Playing live since 1998, Riedl has performed solo, with the backing bands Kicked Out Scout, the Relief, and is a front woman for the Barrettes. She is working on her third full-length album. JoAnn has performed in Canada, Ireland and throughout the US.

Norman Cristofoli is a poet and spoken-word performer and publisher of the Labour of Love literary magazine. He is also the co-founder of the Coffeehouse website for independent artists. However, if all the world is a stage, then he prefers to stay in the tattered old balcony seats, hiding in the shadows, away from the spotlight. He believes that too much emphasis is placed upon the artist, whereas the only thing that truly matters is the art itself. Bios should be buried with the artist... let the art live on.

Peter Haskell was born in 1962 A.D., on the same day that one of the original "Jetsons" episodes was first broadcast. He has lived in Vancouver all his life except from 1978 to 1980, when he lived in Ottawa. His cartoons were published in a free Ottawa publication with a circulation of 5,000, from June 1979 to June 1981. In November 2005, he was on the ballot for Mayor of Vancouver. He campaigned to receive zero votes but sold anti-homelessness pre-bonds for $5 so the homeless could receive a free bus pass.

Our buddies at Time Tunnel have put together another massive toy & collectible show at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds for Saturday, March 24th, 11m - 4pm. Admission is $5 general, $15 for Early Bird hours (9-11am) and kids under 12 are $2.50

Overpass Gallery exhibition Permission and Consent exploring the politcs of gender has a reception on Saturday, March 24th at 859 West Hedding, San Jose, 3pm - midnight.
Artists include: Howard Pugh, Anabella Pinon, Joe Miller, John Kurtyka, Tim Cottengim, Al Preciado, Bette Linderman, Francesca Lovecchio, Monika Rose, Paul Gonzales, Julie Batista, Linda Churchill and others.
Now for the one's I'm not posting, and here's why:
If you're having an art show....list the artists' names! I wanted to post three exhibits coming up, two in businesses and one benefit auction, but there's no artists' names listed on the flyers, and no info on the websites.

Speaking of Strange
We Are the Strange has its Cinquest premiere tonight at 7pm at the California Theater. It also plays tomorrow night (March 2), after the artist's reception of the exhibit here at AD at midnight at Camera 12. We'll all be there and invite you to get your tickets here and join us!!
