OMG! San Jose in the NY Times?!

It's true, be it through the back door of an article on San Jose in the Travel section, we're happy all the same that AD, KALEID, Phantom Galleries (though not by name but description) & the SoFA district (mentioned no less than SIX times) received a little ink in such a highly regarded and well read national paper. Perhaps San Jose's thriving art and culture image is at a tipping point.

This is the opening line of Josh Sen's article:
"ACRONYMS applied to up-and-coming urban neighborhoods often hint at grungy hipness, suggesting the presence of cutting-edge art galleries and underground nightclubs, with the promise of lattes and live-work lofts to come. So it is with SoFA in San Jose."

And then: "In a city that nurtures its art institutions, an underground art scene has also taken shape. Vacant buildings, which still blemish many downtown blocks, have been transformed into temporary exhibit space for local painters and sculptors, attractive place-holders until permanent tenants arrive.
The best established of these spaces, an airy, engaging gallery called KALEID, sits on South Fourth Street. Along with a collection of other downtown galleries, it stays open until 9 p.m. on First Fridays , a kind of roving art reception held on the first Friday of every month."

It's a well rounded snapshot of what San Jose is really up to lately with many worthwhile establishments getting the cred they deserve. Read the entire article here (It will appear in the Sunday, May 20th NY Times paper edition.)

Here are some new photos (set 1 | set 2) for those of you that couldn't make it out to Camille's opening reception on Saturday, May 19th.

We were able to catch a sneak peek at Camille Rose Garcia's exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Art yesterday and it is absolutely amazing! Camille has created a beautiful dark (under)world which leaves one suspended between feelings of deep despair and heightened glee. Tragic Kingdom opens on May 12th with an artist's reception on May 19th (you must be a member to attend.)

Devon Sproule, just home from a British support tour with Woodstock legend Richie Havens, heads out across the U.S. to promote her latest efforts. City Salvage Records, proudly announces the release of Keep Your Silver Shined, a new collection of songs from 24-year-old singer and guitarist Devon Sproule (rhymes with role), with national promotion and distribution by Waterbug Records.

Produced by Jeff Romano in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge mountains, Keep Your Silver Shined highlights Sproule’s talent for combining Appalachian, folk and jazz influences. From the front porch thump of "Old Virginia Block" to the high lonesome traditional "The Weeping Willow,” featuring fellow Virginia-native Mary Chapin Carpenter, this record finds Sproule making another important contribution to the Great American Songbook.

Benjamin Henderson, circa 1982, San Jose CA. Ben is the former frontman for the San Jose rock outfit Delta Activity. He currently shuttles between solo acoustic storytelling and avante-garde jazz improvisations with his Good Hustle emsemble. Looking to release recordings and tour in both settings should make 2007 a busy and exciting year for him.

Bruno 9Li on KQED Arts & Culture site

Kristin Farr wrote a very nice review of Bruno's work on KQED's Arts & Culture website. She spent a lot of time asking questions and forming her own opinions which makes for a well rounded visual journey of Bruno's exhibit. Clik here for the review.

Fosik NYC exhibit

AJ Fosik (AD 2001 & AD 2004 with RotGut cohort KGBE) has an exhibit of new works opening tonight in New York City at Jonathan Levine's gallery.

When we first encountered AJ & KGBE's work (Fosik had just left Detroit and moved to NY) they were hanging their art pieces high up on poles in the early Sunday morning hours when no one was around.

For their second show with us, AJ drove cross country not only with his art installation for the gallery, but all of his belongings as well (including his cool vintage scooter!)....he had decided to move to Southern California...now he's showing back in NY...the universe has such a strange sense of humour! We wish you the best AJ!

AJ's Limited AD tshirt, 2001 (we still have some available! $25.)
