Homouroboros lights up San Jose tonight!

Homouroboros at Burning Man 2007

UPDATE: Homouroboros Dedication Ceremony May 17th!!

Please join burners, press and public for the Black Rock Arts Foundation ribbon-cutting ceremony for Peter Hudson's Homouroboros installation! This will be the official kick-off for the Zero1 festival, and the beginning of an entire month of monkey business in downtown San Jose.

The dedication will take place at 6pm on Saturday, May 17th at the Children's Discovery Museum - Discovery Meadow (directions here). Once the ribbon is cut by Melissa Alexander, Executive Director of BRAF, and Peter Hudson, the artist and creator of Homouroboros, the drums will start to pound and the zoetrope will start to spin. Get ready for what Wired Magazine called the winner of the "WOW, did you see that?" survey at Burning Man 2007.

Reception follows the ceremony, 7pm - 9pm at Anno Domini gallery with food and refreshments. Be sure to see this incredible zoetrope at its best ... in full dark ... to appreciate the effects under the strobe lights of what scientists call "the persistence of vision". We'll all walk over to the monkeys at 9pm for a full night experience!

Homouroboros by Peter Hudson in San Jose

And don't forget, this piece will be in Discovery Meadow from May 15th - June 15th. Come by during the day, too (we'll have special daytime viewers available). Bring friends, family, kids, neighbors and co-workers! It's free to the public and a perfect fulfillment of BRAF's mission to place experimental, highly interactive art in public settings.

===================================
Volunteer Docents Needed To Host Homouroboros!

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is about to install a huge animated zoetrope full of life-sized monkeys in Discovery Meadow from May 15 to June 15, and we need some unique volunteer help to ensure the public touches it!

Wired Magazine called Peter Hudson’s Homouroboros winner of the 2007 “Wow, did you see that?” award at Burning Man, among hundreds of unconventional expressions of radical creativity. Triggered by the public playing drums, the 24’ high 30’ wide spinning installation features strobe lights at night and shutter glasses by day to give the appearance the monkeys are swinging through a giant Victorian-era tree sculpture.

Homouroboros is perhaps the most interactive, viscerally intense, and engaging public art most people have encountered. It is coming to the park, not a museum, as an experiment, because San Jose is one of the most diverse cities in the nation and this free gift is for everyone. To support an amazing public experience with high-tech art so unconventional, we seek docents to staff the installation, invite folks to play with it, answer questions, and call our support team of Monkey Wrenches if anything breaks. Won’t you help? Please email: southbay@burningman.com.

We especially need docents during daytime hours, beginning 10AM, and we would especially love groups from companies, schools, cultural, or community organizations to host for a shift or two. We expect crowds 10AM-10:30PM since Homouroboros will be actively promoted as a preview to the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge, coming June 4-8 - don’t miss that!

Engaging passers-by who are totally amazed by a giant art installation we’re hosting is an experience we love, and invite you to know. We also invite you to know us, since this installation and the Black Rock Arts Foundation are both about stimulating community and civic participation through art. We deeply appreciate Anno Domini and Phantom Galleries' strong support of this project and our mission.

Monkey Business in San Jose

Black Rock Arts Foundation is working to bring Homouroboros by Peter Hudson to San Jose for a month long exhibit beginning mid May, 2008. At 24 feet tall and 30 feet in diameter, Homouroboros is one of the largest, most ambitious zoetropes ever created, and public exhibition of the piece will establish a new level of interactivity for public art.

A community event featuring the artist will be held here at Anno Domini gallery on Thursday, March 20th from 6:30pm - 9pm. Admission is a $10 donation, no one turned away for lack of funds. All proceeds to benefit the Homouroboros project. ($28,000 has already been raised toward their goal of $40,000.)

Volunteers are also needed to support this amazing outdoor, interactive exhibition. If you would like to lend your hands or mind to this project, feel free to attend this event for more informaiton, or visit their site here.

LISTEN/VISION 02

Overlap.org and VOLUME present:
LISTEN/VISION 02

listen_vision.jpg

Friday, March 21st. 2008, 7-9pm
San Francisco Art Institute Lecture Hall
800 Chestnut St. San Francisco, CA 94133

LISTEN/VISION is a unique series exploring the art of perception. It is a place and time for a shared experience of sound and light and space. Volume and Overlap.org have partnered to commission new and unreleased sound and video works from an international pool of acclaimed contemporary artists. These exclusive pieces, not to be found anywhere on the web or a CD, are presented in a collective listening environment. Links:
 Overlap.org Volumeprojects.org

Featured Artists:

GREGG KOWALSKY – “Rosebud for Red Magus” – 2006 – 18:17 min. Kowalsky’s compositions range from drone and noise pieces to the psychedelic, which are highly influenced by the thick, humid air of South Florida where Gregg lived for most of his life. He is interested in filling the spaces his music occupies through dense, live
mixes. He has composed for film, dance, acoustic ensembles and sound installations. Gregg’s debut full-length album, Through The Cardial Window was released on the Kranky label in Spring 2006. http://ossobucco.net

DAVID KWAN - SOLARIS - 2006 - 10:07 min. Sound-generated video projections; dimensions and running time variable; video projection with sound. David Kwan composes soundscapes using live radio signals and feeds them into a customized video imaging system to reveal visual patterning and to electromagnetically alter their dimensions. The end result is an electronic form of painting that is constructed from sound but manifested as light. http://www.meridiangallery.org/davidkwan2003.html

CHIKA and I8U - Infinity02 - 2008 - 30:38 min. Unlimited or unmeasurable in extent of space, duration of time: the infinite nature of the fabric of space. CHiKA uses minimal objects in two-dimensional space to create a video work invoking the feeling of the unlimited possibilities, approaching the unmeasureable nature of the infinite. I8u’s soundscapes inspired by the concept of string theory mirror our limited understanding and imagination of these strings as they slip in and out of the dimensions we are aware of. The audio and visual moves from a closed world with perspective as its corresponding symbolic form. http://www.i8u.com http://www.imagima.com

SAWAKO – “untitled” – 2006 – 15:18 min. Sawako is a Tokyo/NYC-based sound sculptor who understands the value of dynamics and the power of silence. After beginning in video art, Sawako shifted her focus from the video camera to sound. Once through the processor named Sawako, sounds in everyday life - field recordings, instruments, voice and electronic sounds - float in space vividly with a digital yet organic texture. Her unique sonic world has been called “post romantic sound” by Boston’s Weekly Dig. http://www.12k.com/sawako.html

THIS IS ALSO A WAX POETICS RELEASE PARTY for EAST OF UNDERGROUND !

In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the U.S. Army held a show-band contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and Funkadelic.

The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, the devouring drums. But song choice is just as responsible for the success of the album.

Unlike other obscure-funk reissues and compilations, East of Underground is immediately familiar, instantly gratifying, and endlessly playable. And especially poignant today.

Benjamin Henderson, circa 1982, San Jose CA. Ben is the former frontman for the San Jose rock outfit Delta Activity. He currently shuttles between solo acoustic storytelling and avante-garde jazz improvisations with his Good Hustle emsemble. Looking to release recordings and tour in both settings should make 2007 a busy and exciting year for him.

JoAnn Riedl’s deep, aggressive vocals and percussive, dirty, rock-guitar style hail from Milwaukee. "Her ability to switch from acoustic to electric in an intimate solo setting, along with her raucous, almost punk, approach, has set her apart from her peers with reckless abandon," according to Brian Barney and David Luhrssen of the Milwaukee WI Shepherd Express. Playing live since 1998, Riedl has performed solo, with the backing bands Kicked Out Scout, the Relief, and is a front woman for the Barrettes. She is working on her third full-length album. JoAnn has performed in Canada, Ireland and throughout the US.

Norman Cristofoli is a poet and spoken-word performer and publisher of the Labour of Love literary magazine. He is also the co-founder of the Coffeehouse website for independent artists. However, if all the world is a stage, then he prefers to stay in the tattered old balcony seats, hiding in the shadows, away from the spotlight. He believes that too much emphasis is placed upon the artist, whereas the only thing that truly matters is the art itself. Bios should be buried with the artist... let the art live on.

Peter Haskell was born in 1962 A.D., on the same day that one of the original "Jetsons" episodes was first broadcast. He has lived in Vancouver all his life except from 1978 to 1980, when he lived in Ottawa. His cartoons were published in a free Ottawa publication with a circulation of 5,000, from June 1979 to June 1981. In November 2005, he was on the ballot for Mayor of Vancouver. He campaigned to receive zero votes but sold anti-homelessness pre-bonds for $5 so the homeless could receive a free bus pass.

Spring Street, NYC-place to be this weekend

Let's all get on a plane and head to 11 Spring Street (at Elizabeth), NYC for this weekend's open house of the decade. Wooster Collective is working in partnership with the new owners of the building that has been notorious for years as street / graff artists' playground. They plan multi-million dollar condos on this spot, but before they begin renovations on Monday morning, there's one last farewell in grand style. For the past few months, national and international artists were invited to paint the 30,000 sq foot inside...all of which will be sealed up as if a time capsule of sorts.

For more info visit Wooster or read about it in the NY Times.

Perpetual Motion Roadshow at Anno Domini!

Perpetual Motion Roadshow #39...
Thursday, December 14th at 8pm

The Perpetual Motion Roadshow is an indie press touring circuit, an unholy combination of a vaudevillian variety show and a punk rock tour. Each month, three new lively indie performers pile in a car and do seven cities in eight days, doing shows with the bold guarantee: NO BORING READINGS OR YOUR MONEY BACK! Transnational, it loops the northeast May-October and makes runs down the west coast during November-April. Founded by No Media Kings, they've been making their own fun since 2003 -- running on pure volunteer power and dirty dirty gasoline.

PMR #39 features...

singer/songwriter/spoken word sensation
TROY CURTIS from San Jose
opens the show!

irreverent guitarist
OCHO
from Minnesota!

unicorn pop poet
MIKE YOUNG
from Ashland!

the common man's poet
T-POE
from Portland!

Ocho has been performing original songs for almost ten years. His songs reflect a mind that's upbeat, thoughtful, irreverent, frustrated, and inspired. They give the listener something to laugh at, like the futility of survival in the modern world, and the lack of answers to important life questions: "What's our ultimate purpose?" and "How can I make money without really DOING anything?" At 16, he unwittingly started a punk-rock scene in a rural South Dakota town that still thrives. He recently received his Master's degree in counseling psychology. His latest CD, "GoriillaBuddha," explores the stupidity and healing power of that science.

Mike Young is a major proponent of remote-controlled grace. He co-edits NOÖ Journal (www.noojournal.com), a free literary and political print magazine distributed all over and online. Plus he publishes stuff: poetry and fiction, in lovely indie magazines like Pindeldyboz, Opium Magazine, elimae, Juked, Wordriot and 3AM Magazine. Somehow, despite the smog and android droppings that dominate modern air, he has also managed to develop a singing voice. It is independent from his body. It pays scant rent. Check out his blog Dragonfly on a Dog Chain at www.noojournal.com/blog.

T-Poe is a native of Portland, Oregon. He is a Combat Veteran of the Vietnam War, which has influenced his poetry greatly. Although he has no formal writing education, he has written extensively about the war as well as the wonders of nature and the condition of this animal "man" as he have experienced them. He knows only that which he has seen and felt, and hope you may, through his words, experience thoughts and emotions foreign and fascinating, if not familiar and comforting.

KFJC's Psychotronix Film Festival this Saturday!

KFJC and friends present the Psychotronix Film Festival, an annual twisted cornucopia of 1950's commercials, classic (and usually really obscure) cartoons, trailers from schlocky B-pictures, kidvid, musical shorts, unintentionally funny instructional films and more. The gala feature is always a surprise, even to KFJC . . . but no doubt a veritable CITIZEN KANE of the "guys in stupid-looking monster suits" genre. The next 16mm film-filled extravaganza will soil the college's hallowed halls on Saturday, December 9th at 7:00p.m.

Proceeds benefit Foothill College's highly entertaining radio station, the aforementioned KFJC 89.7 FM. Mr. Emmett hosts the festivities - dispensing door prizes and witty repartee. Psychotronix Film Festivals take place in ROOM 5015 on the Foothill Campus.

Admission: $5 donation
Parking: $2 (bring quarters!)

A Convention of the Tattoo Arts

State of Grace Productions presents
A Convention of the Tattoo Arts
October 20-21-22, 2006 at Parkside Hall
180 Park Ave. San Jose, CA. 95113

Convention admission is $15 per day, three-day pass available for $30 on Friday State of Grace Productions is proud to present "A Convention of the Tattoo Arts," the 2006 San Jose tattoo convention. Our convention is an annual event taking place on the third weekend of October. This is an event featuring live tattooing, tattoo contests, and art fusion performances. We are proud of the select group of participating artists representing a variety of styles as well as a broad geographical spectrum. Because of the high profile nature of our artists, we suggest you contact them beforehand to make appointments. Website links (when available) are provided on the "artists" page of this site.

"A Convention of the Tattoo Arts" is a 75 booth show. We are not in any way attempting to throw the biggest show out there, we'll leave that to the non-tattoo industry people. A smaller show allows us to maintain a high quality standard as well as insure that our artists stay busy. You won't find sunglass vendors or piercers at this event. We do apologize for the many tattoo studios who we weren't able to find space for but we feel that people within the industry will understand.

Finally we would like to let you know that Roman and Horitaka of State of Grace Productions both get tattooed, live, work and spend our money in San Jose. We think this is important and want you to know this. One of our motivations for throwing this show was to stop outside, non-tattoo industry people from invading our town, taking money and leaving without giving anything back. State of Grace Productions is a San Jose based company and works in conjunction with many local tattoo shops. We are here to promote the local tattoo scene, please know what you are supporting when you attend a tattoo event.

C. Ryder Cooley & Jessie Rose Vala - Jessie and Ryder return to share an encore performance of accordion serenades, a singing saw and a collaborative animated story-telling experience! This will be the climactic end to their Deerwood and the Coral Cavern exhibit at Anno Domini.

TRINITY SESSIONS
Friday, May 19th, 2006

Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
Performances begin at 8:00 p.m.

The lineup:

From the bowels of San Jose... the heir to Bukowski... Marcos Johnson.

Lisa Dewey began playing live shows in 1990. The ethereal sound of her music starts as folk songs that transform into floaty pop. As a Kitchen Whore Records recording artist Lisa lives and performs in the South Bay.

We all want unconditional love and now we can have it. The Unconditional Love Machine has come to pump out their acoustic punk driven music. This trio of husband, wife and wife's best friend is from Santa Cruz but they've come over the hill with their guitar, drums and violin to give you a sonic hug you won't soon forget!

DIG DUG Tues., May 9th

Tuesday, May 9th is the monthly DIG DUG dj listening party & late night record swap, hosted by Nui.
8-11 pm every second Tuesday of the month
Admission: Free and open to the public
Location: Anno Domini, 366 South First Street, San Jose

We'll begin the evening with a cameo appearance from AD's own Brian Eder. Brian will play selections from his personal vinyl library, which he started collecting back in the 80's. He's pulled them out and dusted them off for your listening pleasure.

Metro music editor Todd Inoue doesn't know what he'll spin until he starts pulling records--which are embarrassingly untouched since his 07-Pro went to crap four years ago. But do expect music on the rap/bass/90s tip.

James Vidal is a talented photographer, stencillist, and music afficianado with particular interest in the Chicago post-rock sound of Tortoise, Stereolab, et. al. Though he's not a DJ by trade, I admire his passion for pursuing, collecting, and playing music.

It seems like everywhere I go, I run into Aaron aka DJ Air Bear. He is constantly on the hunt for new sounds, and he plans to play selections that span the range of his eclectic tastes. He is well versed in suchidisyncratic subgenres as Northern Soul, 60's movie soundtracks, and leftfield indie rock.

Sellers will include Jeff Jagged and DJ Ferrari, with more to be announced...

In the exhibition Bootleg Baby, content-rich icons such as Moors, Black Power figures, consumer logos, blackface children, cheap signage, graffiti, and celebrities are layered one upon another in paintings that are stacked and hinged on the walls as charms. Coexisting with these charms are pieces of rural debris that tumble into the gallery space, creating in a distinctly American cacophony. Music by CatFive

Trinity Sessions this Friday at AD

Trinity Sessions returns to AD this Friday and every 3rd Friday of the month. It's free and a great way to start your evening downtown. Your host this month, Patricia Black, has put together a great lineup to get your night rolling along. Local poet Patula Lee kicks it off, followed by SF based singer/songwriter Mark Silverman (some of you may remember Mark from his visits to AD with the Perpetual Motion Roadshow - he's great), and Kaila D'Sa... we saw him for the first time at an open mic at the SoFA Lounge. He's another great reminder of the buried treasures that live/work amongst us here in San Jose.

Patula Lee is a poet whose honesty is an art unto itself. Somtimes her poetry is simply frank and in other moments it's flowery, but firm. It's hard to walk away from Patula's poetry and not understand love and life from an imbedded perspective.

Mark Silverman will make you laugh about things in public that you had only laughed about behind closed doors. With his tragicly funny and infectious toons you'll wonder if he is a songwriter or a comedian and you'll definately wonder if he is for real?

Kaila D'Sa is a voice of many souls. Kaila's passion is heard in every note. This singer/songwriter is connected to his roots and channels them in the songs he sings. Kaila will take you to many places with his melodies, his guitar playing and his overall vibe.

Doors: 7:30 p.m. (performance begins at 8 p.m. - sets run 20-30 minutes per artist)
Admission: Free and open to the public

Save the date: beginning in April, Trinity Sessions will be held every third Friday of the month at Anno Domini!

Each installment features a plethora of talent behind the decks who have been encouraged to play what they want, utilizing those forgotten corners of the collection that don't fit at clubs, bars, or parties. We've also invited some of the deepest collectors in the area to bring a few crates of gems to sell or swap.

The lineup:

Chaz will once again prove that he is the most underrated DJ in town. Even he doesn't think he's very good. But he's wrong.

Ennui will start with Joe Meek and end with electric Miles. What happens in between will be determined shortly.

Strictly 7 will work around work around his legendary 45 collection, playing a rare LP/12" set.

Age (soul, funk, breaks, psych, jazz and rare hip hop)

Jeff Jagged (80's, disco, italo, soul, randomness)
