Garden of Memory tonight in Oakland

Chapel of the Chimes

This is one of our favorite sound art events to attend every year. It's well worth the trek if you don't live in Oakland. Thought I'd let someone else provide the accolades this round. Here's a nice write up from Jason Victor Serinusm of the East Bay Express.

Critics Choice: GARDEN OF MEMORY

The most extraordinary concert of the season, the Garden of Memory columbarium walk-through in the historic, Julia Morgan-designed Chapel of the Chimes, returns this weekend. The annual summer solstice celebration, whose fame has spread to Europe and the Far East, will scatter no less than forty local and international cutting-edge musicians and ensembles throughout the extraordinary facility. With acoustics to die for, and multiple, equally intriguing performances vying for attention, the more than 2,000 attendees expected this year are sure to find their consciousness and imagination expand. Arrive early to find decent parking and hear the most popular performers.

Price: $12, students/seniors $8, under 12 $5, under 5 free

More from Gretel Prinn as we had hoped...

A few weeks after the first song, "Patch a Signal," by Gretel Prinn surfaced, we've noticed a significant increase in the number of results we get from a Google search in our latest quest to learn more about about this emerging talent. Gretel Prinn is the result of an ongoing sound experiment masterminded by songstress and programmer, Annabel Linquist. There's more to download available here.

LISTEN/VISION 03 Wednesday, May 14th at SFAI!

LISTEN/VISION 03

The third installment of LISTEN/VISION presents a very special evening with live performances by the three principal members of the German arts platform Raster-Noton: Carsten Nicolai, Frank Bretschneider, and Olaf Bender. Each artist will perform individually, and collectively as Signal. These artists are considered by many to be some of the most important and influential individuals working within the field of experimental electronic audiovisual performance today.

May 14, 2008
San Francisco Art Institute
800 Chestnut Street
San Francisco, CA 94133
7pm-midnight

Tickets are $15 for the general public, free for SFAI Students (limit one per student).
Tickets will be sold the night of the performance at the venue, advance tickets may be purchased online here: www.volumeprojects.org

Raster-Noton: Archiv Für Ton Und Nichtton is a platform, a network covering the overlapping border areas of pop, art, and science. After surviving the storm that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall, East German sound manipulators Carsten Nicolai, Frank Bretschneider, and Olaf Bender pooled their resources as Raster-Noton and jacked into international art currents. Their minimalist electronic CDs and sound objects have sent power surges through a global grid connecting like-minded artists from Coil’s ElpH to Tokyo’s Ryoji Ikeda.

Carsten Nicolai
Carsten Nicolai is an artist who works intensively in the transitional area between art and science. For several years now he has also experimented with sound under the pseudonym Noto to create his own code of signs, acoustic and visual symbols. As Alva Noto he leads those experiments into the field of electronic music.

Among others, Nicolai already performed as Alva Noto at Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, at Centre Pompidou in Paris, at Kunsthaus Graz and at Tate Modern in London. Additionally he has projects with diverse artists such as Ryoji Ikeda (cyclo), Mika Vainio or Thomas Knak (opto); recently he toured with Ryuichi Sakamoto through Europe, Australia and Asia.

Olaf Bender
Germany-based Olaf Bender is one of three founders of the Raster-Noton imprint. Beside the management of Raster-Noton, Olaf Bender is responsible for the graphic design and public appearance of the label and its products. He often records under such aliases as Byetone and Lumen for solo projects, and together with Komet and Carsten Nicolai (aka Alva Noto) forms the laptop microsound trio Signal. His output is extremely sparse, with his sole full-length contributions being a disc in the prize-winning 20' to 2000 series and 2003's Feld, released on Raster-affiliated label Binemusic.

Frank Bretschneider
Frank Bretschneider works as a musician, composer and video artist in Berlin. His work is known for precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and its minimal, flowing approach. Bretschneider‘s subtle and detailed music is echoed by his visuals: perfect translated realizations of the qualities found in music within visual phenomena.

After the fall of the wall, he and Olaf Bender founded the record label Rastermusic which finally merged with Carsten Nicolai‘s Noton to form Raster-Noton in 1999. He has performed at music and new media festivals such as Ars Electronica, Cut & Splice, Mutek, Offf, Sonar, Steirischer Herbst, Transmediale, Ultima, etc. In addition to his solo work he has collaborated with artists such as with Taylor Deupree, Olafur Eliasson, Steve Roden, and Ralph Steinbrüchel.

LISTEN/VISION is a unique series exploring the art of perception. It is a place and time for a shared experience of sound and light and space. Volume and Overlap.org have partnered to commission new and unreleased sound and video works from an international pool of acclaimed contemporary artists. These exclusive pieces, not to be found anywhere on the web or a CD, are presented in a collective listening environment. Links:

Featured Artists:

GREGG KOWALSKY – “Rosebud for Red Magus” – 2006 – 18:17 min. Kowalsky’s compositions range from drone and noise pieces to the psychedelic, which are highly influenced by the thick, humid air of South Florida where Gregg lived for most of his life. He is interested in filling the spaces his music occupies through dense, live
mixes. He has composed for film, dance, acoustic ensembles and sound installations. Gregg’s debut full-length album, Through The Cardial Window was released on the Kranky label in Spring 2006. http://ossobucco.net

DAVID KWAN - SOLARIS - 2006 - 10:07 min. Sound-generated video projections; dimensions and running time variable; video projection with sound. David Kwan composes soundscapes using live radio signals and feeds them into a customized video imaging system to reveal visual patterning and to electromagnetically alter their dimensions. The end result is an electronic form of painting that is constructed from sound but manifested as light. http://www.meridiangallery.org/davidkwan2003.html

CHIKA and I8U - Infinity02 - 2008 - 30:38 min. Unlimited or unmeasurable in extent of space, duration of time: the infinite nature of the fabric of space. CHiKA uses minimal objects in two-dimensional space to create a video work invoking the feeling of the unlimited possibilities, approaching the unmeasureable nature of the infinite. I8u’s soundscapes inspired by the concept of string theory mirror our limited understanding and imagination of these strings as they slip in and out of the dimensions we are aware of. The audio and visual moves from a closed world with perspective as its corresponding symbolic form. http://www.i8u.com http://www.imagima.com

SAWAKO – “untitled” – 2006 – 15:18 min. Sawako is a Tokyo/NYC-based sound sculptor who understands the value of dynamics and the power of silence. After beginning in video art, Sawako shifted her focus from the video camera to sound. Once through the processor named Sawako, sounds in everyday life - field recordings, instruments, voice and electronic sounds - float in space vividly with a digital yet organic texture. Her unique sonic world has been called “post romantic sound” by Boston’s Weekly Dig. http://www.12k.com/sawako.html

PAUL CURRERI & DEVON SPROULE this Tuesday at Anno Domini!

Anno Domini presents:

PAUL CURRERI & DEVON SPROULE
First time co-bill of these two amazing singer/songwriters on the west coast- on tour for new album releases!

"FOUR STARS. His best yet. A riveting trip!" ~ Paste
"...both down-home and uptown, a delicate, Appalachian stringed-swing… Sproule doesn’t sound like any other singer-songwriter of her generation." ~ Boston Herald
"Sproule's vocal and lyrical beauty is unmatched." ~ Rolling Stone

Date: Tuesday, October 23rd.
Time: Doors open 8pm, $5 admission
Location: Anno Domini gallery
366 South First Street, downtown San Jose

Born on a commune in Kingston, Ontario, Devon Sproule claims dual citizenship with both Canada and the US. She now makes her home in Charlottesville, VA. After moving between private, public and home schooling, she eventually left high school, recorded her first record, and began touring nationally -- all before the age of eighteen.

Her newest record, her fourth, Keep Your Silver Shined, presents an honest and sparkling portrait of Devon Sproule: candid, poetic and right at home. "…both down-home and uptown, a delicate, Appalachian stringed-swing… Sproule doesn’t sound like any other singer-songwriter of her generation. "- Boston Herald Devon’s fresh off a 6-week run in the UK. "Sproule's vocal and lyrical beauty is unmatched." - Rolling Stone

Internationally acclaimed as a songwriter, guitarist, and spirited live performer, Paul Curreri “brings a renewed eloquence to the medium.” – The New Yorker. He grew up playing music but ended up enrolling at Rhode Island School of Design to pursue painting and film. “My movies were okay, I guess,” he said. But by the time Paul graduated from RISD, he'd composed over 200 songs on guitar and piano. His newest record, his fifth, The Velvet Rut, is quite the sonic eruption (Curreri played all the instruments himself), and folks seem to be digging it: “FOUR STARS. His best yet. A riveting trip!” – Paste Paul also lives in Charlottesville. He is roommates with Devon. He is also married to Devon.

The two rarely perform together (“You don’t necessarily get paid twice as much just because there are two of you,” Devon laughs. “Plus, it’s nice to miss somebody every once in a while.” “More love letters,” Paul chimes in). This will be their first EVER co-bill run up the west coast! Expect solo sets from each of these fantastic guitarists, plus, we’ve been told crossing our fingers for some duets may very likely pay off!

Some thoughts from Rick Walker, the festival organizer...

It's been a heady year in this relatively new musical movement:

The mecca website of the movement (started by Bay Area looping hardware designer Kim Flint), www.loopersdelight.com is now getting over a million hits a month from all over the world.

In the last two years alone, suddenly, artists as diverse as Madonna, Bjork, Peter Gabriel and Nine Inch Nails have featured live performances that are use this new technology. This couldn't be said as early as only two years ago. Live looping's technology is mushrooming and innovating continually and it's presence is expanding at an exponential rate in the pop music world.

Production of brand new techology has also doubled in each of the past three years in both hardware and software. Many of those designers have been inspired by the Santa Cruz festival which they have all performed or shown at.

All of this has resulted in large multi-page feature articles in Guitar Player magazine, DRUM! magazine and there are planned features in upcoming months in Electronic Musician magazine, Modern Drummer, Tape Op and Make magazine as the efforts of 'the looping capital of the world: Santa Cruz" begin to have national and international recognition.

To read more about the individual headlining artists, find hi-res photographs for publicity and/or downloadable mp3s, please visit http://www.y2kloopfest.com/bios.html

Devon Sproule, just home from a British support tour with Woodstock legend Richie Havens, heads out across the U.S. to promote her latest efforts. City Salvage Records, proudly announces the release of Keep Your Silver Shined, a new collection of songs from 24-year-old singer and guitarist Devon Sproule (rhymes with role), with national promotion and distribution by Waterbug Records.

Produced by Jeff Romano in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge mountains, Keep Your Silver Shined highlights Sproule’s talent for combining Appalachian, folk and jazz influences. From the front porch thump of "Old Virginia Block" to the high lonesome traditional "The Weeping Willow,” featuring fellow Virginia-native Mary Chapin Carpenter, this record finds Sproule making another important contribution to the Great American Songbook.

Benjamin Henderson, circa 1982, San Jose CA. Ben is the former frontman for the San Jose rock outfit Delta Activity. Rick Walker is a leading figure in the emerging international live looping movement. He is a sound designer, electronic music composer, author, percussionist, trapset drummer, multi-instrumentalist and "found sound" artist. To find information on his solo cd's and tour dates, his percussion/drumming activities, and his composition/production career visit Loop.pooL.

Your Drugs My Money is a collective of experimental artists and musicians from Los Angeles. They embrace the utilization of unconventional instruments and eerie undertones, that you could describe as an ambient durge. This has lead them to journey out of Los Angeles to collaborate with other avant garde artists such as Argumentix and Mattress. Your Drugs My Money is all about exploring new dimensions in the field of sound. The echo's will stretch, and your idea of what music is will be questioned. Buddha Machine by FM3 has arrived!

The Buddha Machine is an "anti-iPod" of sorts. It's an inexpensive-looking small box that plays nine different drones (FM3 loops) through either the headphone jack, or the integrated speaker. A toggle switch allows the user to cycle through the short loops, which will play continuously for hundreds of hours on a single pair of AA batteries (included with purchase). And if the batteries do run out, the box even has a plug for DC power. The box is totally self-contained, and the onboard RAM cannot be modified (sounds like a challenge!). The box is available in six different colors (shipped randomly); it is manufactured by a Buddhist-run factory in southern China.

FESTIVAL INFORMATION:

Y2K6 Live Looping Festival Celebrates Fifth Year with expansive program and internet jam!

Over 50 artists from around the globe will converge on the San Francisco Bay Area this fall for the Fifth Annual Y2K6 Live Looping Festival. Perfomers from across the United States and as many as 10 other countries will appear in Santa Cruz, Calif., on October 21 and 22, for the main two days of the festival. Additional festival-related events will be held in San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland during the week preceding the main festival.

The brainchild of live looping artist and promoter Rick Walker, Y26K and other looping festivals he has created have inspired similar festivals in 15 countries around the world, including the Zurich Live Looping Festival last summer, which drew 40 artists from nine countries over its three days.

In a demonstration of the technological edge defined by the live looping genre, the Y26K festival will be streamed in real time to the web, and will feature a real-time Internet jam, using NINJam technology, between musicians at the festival and live loopers from Europe, the UK, South America, the Near East and Japan.

This year’s event coincides with the 10th anniversary of loopersdelight.com, the website that serves as the central gathering point and information exchange for the international live looping movement. Looper’s Delight currently receives over a million hits a year now.

About Live Looping and the Loopers Community

Looping is a broad class of music based on the idea of performances and recordings built using long delay lines. Looping artists use a variety of sources to generate layered textures which are manipulated in real-time in various ways (including reversal, time or pitch shifting, etc.), resulting in complex interactive compositions. The breadth of the looping genre will be well demonstrated at the Y26K festival, which will guitarists, cellists, trumpet players, solo singers, fusion bands, avant-garde musicians, circuit benders, abstract electronica artists, even comedians and spoken word artists.

What is fascinating about the loopers community is that it is a tightly knit group of musicians and sound artists not tied by style of music. With the use of delay lines as a medium being the only commonality, the range of musical styles created by loopers is diverse and may be, by turns, hypnotic, propulsive, ethereal, or simply bizarre.

In another sign of the dedication of looping devotees, neither the festival’s organizers nor the musicians performing at the festival receive any compensation, and all travel at their own expense.

The high level of activity in the fast-growing live looping field has had a huge impact on the rapid development of its technology in the past three years. Some looping artists and other members of the community run small companies designing live looping tools. Some examples include Matthias Grob of Brazil, inventor of the Gibson Digital Echoplex; Bob Amstadt , creater of the Looperlative, currently the most sophisticated live looping hardware device; Andrew Ostler, with his Augustus Loop; and Jeffrey Larson’s Mobius. As a result, in addition to its musical role, the Y26K festival has also consistently served as the site for world premieres of this cutting-edge technology.
