A great (and long overdue) article came out today about our compadres, Sam & Matthew Rodriguez, aka Shorty Fatz. They've been busy since their "Lowrider Arcade" exhibit of custom made lowrider bikes in May 2007.

Juxtapoz exhibit at Laguna Museum opens June 22nd

This is worth a road trip south! 150 amazing artists including past exhibiting A.D. artists: Dalek, Emek, Shepard Fairey, AJ Fosik, Sylvia Ji, Saber and Andrew Schoultz! The list is long and impressive, and some choices a bit curious which creates even more anticipation as to how it's all going to come together. For the full artists' list, visit the Laguna Art Museum website here.

from the press release: In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor is an exhibition that presents the work of approximately one hundred and fifty artists and posits that there has been a huge, but unacknowledged, art movement taking place in this country for the last forty years. Since 1994, this ground swelling of lowbrow, surrealistic, pop, figurative, and narrative work has coalesced and found a voice in the pages of Juxtapoz magazine published in San Francisco. This "rag" has become the most widely read art magazine in the U.S. It is an influencing force on the aspiring artists of generation Y and the millenials, who are now enrolling in art schools in numbers never before seen.

Juxtapoz magazine was founded by Los Angeles artist Robert Williams. The :Juxtapoz aesthetic or lowbrow art" is almost always figurative and is inspired by movies, TV, advertising, black-velvet painting, psychedelic posters, pulp porn, sci-fi and horror, carnival art, comics books and all things lower and middle class. The magazine has and does provide a voice and validation for a brand of artist, like Williams, who has not been accepted traditionally by the typical art-world infrastructure of collector, curator, and critic. However, since its founding, it has been the inspiration for the creation of its own infrastructure supported by Juxtapozian art galleries (in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and New York), collectors, critical attention, and museum exhibitions at adventurous institutions. Since the mid 1990s, with its growing success, Juxtapoz has been a major contributor to the acceptance of painting again as a valid practice for artists, countering forty years of art school canon, which focused on the conceptual practice of context, collectivization, and dematerialization of the art object.

For the last decade the art establishment (collector, curator, critic) has argued that the idea, or construct, of an art movement is outmoded. This exhibition explores the idea of the "Juxtapoz Factor."Is it an organized movement operating under a singular manifesto? Or is it a wave of talented overlooked artists who decided to reach out to the public and create their own canon?

Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky at A.D. Friday, June 6th, 7pm

SoundUnbound.jpg

"For the maverick rhythm scientist Paul D. Miller, sound is liquid; it spills over and slips under categories, firewalls, case law, and legal codes to find us and move us. In the same way, his important collection of sound thinkers and sound ideas calls us to remove the fake 'security' imposed on us by capital and state, and, more crucially, to reimagine freedom and reclaim our creativity." --Jeff Chang, author of Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation

Come meet Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid at Anno Domini, First Frdiay June 6th at 7pm as he discusses his new book Sound Unbound. Free and open to the public.

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid is a conceptual artist, writer, and musician living and working in New York City. His artwork has appeared in the Whitney Biennial, the Venice Biennale for Architecture, the Andy Warhol Museum, and many other venues. Glory Boy Days at Cinquest

While in a SJSU screenwriting class, Paul Encinas conceived and wrote Glory Boy Days and it's showing at the Cinequest Film Festival on March 7th & 8th.

It looks amazing and there's alot of favorable reviews for it's story, cinematography and writing....from the Cinequest site: The pain and ecstasy of being young glow like ember in Glory Boy Days, one of the most extraordinary debuts at Cinequest.

On the day he turns twenty-one, Lando takes stock of his life so far and looks ahead at what the future holds for him. He may be worried about going to college and standing up to his stepfather, but to his friends finding a good party is the concern of the day...

Local friends and former classmates make up the cast and crew, and local hangouts make cameo appearances as well. Glory Boy Days debuted at Slamdance Film Festival, one of only 29 films selected out of 1200!

Congratulations Paul and to everyone involved!

Graffiti Research Lab in San Jose!

GRL in Rotterdam, 2007 (Watch the movie)

James Powderly and Evan Roth of New York based Graffiti Research Lab drop in to San Jose this Wednesday as part of the FUSE lecture series. Powderly with his background in aerospace robotics and Roth emerging from coding, architecture and web design come together to develop new methods of self-expression. Their technological efforts have emerged back on the streets that inspire them using the transitory urban canvas as their showroom. Perhaps it's the ephemeral nature of their work, combined with their authentic voice, tools and open source idealism that has made their artistic efforts embraced on the many streets they have travelled to around the globe. Hope you can make it out. We highly recommend this lecture!

FUSE lecture series
featuring Graffiti Research Lab
Wednesday October 3rd, 7pm
San Jose City Hall, Council Chambers
200 East Santa Clara Street (at So. 4th St)
San Jose, CA 95113

grl_banner.jpg

The G.R.L. has embarked on a mission: to revolutionize tools and languages of urban artists with cheap technology and open knowledge. The lab is dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source tools for urban communication. The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter and reclaim their surroundings from commercial and corporate culture. G.R.L. agents are currently working in the lab and in the field to develop and test a range of experimental technologies for the state-of-the-art graffiti writer. Their website documents those efforts with video documentation and DIY instructions for each project. < http://graffitiresearchlab.com>

James Powderly is a maverick hobbyist dabbling at the fringes of robotics, chemistry, writing, pyrotechnics, graffiti and art. As a Fellow in the Eyebeam R&D OpenLab for the last year James has developed experimental creative technologies and media for the public domain. Powderly was anengineer and the Director of Technology Development at Honeybee Robotics, and a Manhattan-based NASA contractor. He worked on developing the Mars Exploration Rover's Rock Abrasion Tool and built a wall drilling robot for Diller + Scofidio's retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Powderly has been awarded numerous grants, fellowships and awards, including an Award of Distinction in 2006 from Ars Electronica for his work with the Graffiti Research Lab. His work can be found on the surface of Mars and other people's walls throughout the U.S. and Europe. In the Spring, he will begin teaching a class at Parsons Communication Design and Technology program called, "Disruptive Home Economics".

Evan Roth is a recent MFA graduate from the Design Technology department at Parsons where he was his class valedictorian. He is the creator of Graffitti Analysis video, a project that uses motion tracking, computer vision technology, and a custom C++ application to record and analyze a graffiti writer's pen movement over time. Evan's media experiments also include Explicit Content Only, Postal Lables Against Bush video, and Graffiti Taxonomy.

If you can't make it physically, you can catch the G.R.L. in Second Life, the talk will be streamed live to Ars Virtua in Second Life.

Cool hunted

TheCoolhunter.net (THE reference point of choice for the latest in what's hot tomorrow) has posted Bruno 9Li's Mysterium Tremendum exhibit. They included many large images along with the following text:

"Artist Bruno 9Li is an artist of extraordinary talent, who works and lives in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Bruno's work is inspired by alchemical imagery, his surrounding neighborhood and the Art Nouveau period and feature amazing ink on paper works which are remarkably unique. The work is incredibly vibrant even though only a handful of colors are used. Bruno's work seems to re-use the same colors in his latest range. This in no way limits the variety of the work itself, as each piece is wonderfully unique. Geometric form coupled with an illustrative foundation is the springboard for this work. "

Thanks to The Cool Hunter and be sure to visit their site!

Shepard Fairey "One Man Army" opens Sept. 14th

Shepard_toyroom.jpg

Shepard Fairey (2000 AD) will present ONE MAN ARMY with opening receptions on Friday, September 14th & Saturday, September 15th, 7:pm till late each night at the ToyRoom gallery in Sacramento. It promises to be an overwhelming array of past and present prints and original works.

(from the press release:) With Shepard Fairey's & Obey Giant's meteoric rise in popularity, it is easy to forget that Shepard has been working for nearly 18 years with the focus and dedication normally associated with that of the old masters. Bringing us a carcophany of styles, reminiscent of a mix of Russian post industrial design, art nouveau inspired rock posters, photocopied Punk Rock flyers, he expresses his take on the the follies of war, greed and loss of freedom among other subjects of concern in what can only be perceived as a society gone awry."

"The Ghost" by Richard Colman at White Walls

Richard Colman (2006 AD) opens his new exhibit The Ghost, tomorrow night, Saturday, September 8th, at White Walls in San Francisco. His narrative style continues to both remain familiar and evolve with the likes of inverted bears, masked men, regal queens, slithering serpents and bat-winged boys. It's like running into a friend you haven't seen in a while; life's changed them a bit on the surface, as you might expect, but you'd recognize them anywhere. Definitely check it out! It's on view through October 6th.

Jessie Vala "Tortuous Veil" at Motel Gallery

Jessie Vala (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006 AD) has a new exhibit on view now, through October 27th, at Motel Gallery in Portland. Jessie's work is always beautiful, insightful and dreamlike. We highly recommend it!

From their website: The title of the exhibition Tortuous Veil refers to Isis' veil, the thin and mutable barrier between the conscious and unconscious worlds. Drawing heavily on ancient myths, Vala explores the fears, powers, violence and destruction associated with four archetypes, the Werewolf, the Zombie, the Shape-Shifter and the Vampire. These conflicts serve as critical allegories for the real-world issues of environmental degradation, over-consumption, mob mentality and political instability.

Vala is fascinated by the menacing and violent side of the human imagination and begs the question, "Why are humans so attracted to brutality and destruction?" In intricate yet minimal drawings, she depicts female heroines caught deep in their interior landscapes, facing the embodiment of their inner demons.

C'alma Solo Exhibit in Sao Paulo

While in Sao Paulo this last July visiting Bruno 9Li, we spent alot of amazing time (and adventures!) with Stephan Doitschinoff, aka C'alma. His imagery is a meeting between elements of the sacred arts and alchemy to urban art and the pop culture.

He's native to Sao Paulo although he's been known to move around alot. Just before we hooked up with him in July, he had spent several months in Bahai, a poverty stricken village with the intention to bring a little life and light to their neighborhoods with his murals.

We'd like to congratulate him on his solo exhibit (although he's had solos internationally, this is his first in Sao Paulo) at Choque Cultural, a great gallery in SP. The body of work is based on his perceptions of the Divine Comedy, a series he did as a commission for the band Sepultura. Check out his work and then come meet him in person when he has his debut US solo exhibit here at Anno Domini in May 2008!

The Wandering Choe

David Choe's latest Thumbs Up! (Episode 11) was just released at VBS.TV. If you haven't been following it, Thumbs Up! is video journey of David Choe and Harry Kim hitchhiking across the U.S. (thus far). Rumor has it that the journey may take them abroad after they've run out of tracks in the states.

Episode 11 documents the journey from Little Rock to Memphis introducing us to a couple Arkansas troopers and a Palestinian cafe owner in Memphis. Oh, and just for the record, that cool little moniker on the train David points to is the work of BuZ Blurr. Some of you freight fans already know that, especially if your familiar with the work of documentary film maker Bill Daniel and his film, "Who is Bozo Texino?" that took us along on a great search for the truth behind the legend of the Bozo Texino moniker.

Three great movies you should see

BrandUponTheBrain.jpg

With summer upon us, it's tough to find the kind of movies we like, but there are a couple out right now that are amazing.

Brand Upon the Brain is a feature film by Canadian Guy Maddin. It's an eerie, suspenseful, for the most part silent film tale of a childhood lived on a lighthouse island turned orphanage. The main character, also named "Guy Maddin", has an overbearing crazy mother, a beautiful rebellious sister, and a work obsessed father. If you enjoy the likes of, say, surrealist films by Jean Cocteau, you'll appreciate the artistry and weirdness of this movie.

We also highly recommend the anime PAPRIKA. Therapists are able to treat people's reality dysfunctions by entering their dreams. The technology that enables them to do this is stolen, and all hell breaks loose. Keep in mind that this is definitely an anime for adults, it's rated R.

And finally, Day Watch is the follow up to the brilliant Night Watch (2004) both directed by Timur Bekmambetov. Set in present day Moscow, it's part two of the trilogy tale of the truce between good and evil and trying to keep the delicate balance from breaking down completely. And if you haven't seen Night Watch, they're pretty good at bringing you up to speed so you can enjoy Day Watch on it's own and know what's going on.

Sam Anderson has a super length feature in NY Magazine on the "Splasher." The jerk that's been vandalizing some prized street art (yes, it's a vandal vandalizing vandals...that's what makes for the controversy.) All I can say is, I feel sorry for the guy when he gets caught.

Shepard Fairey in NYC & DUMBO

E Pluribus Venom - New Works by Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey is gearing up for a dual location exhibit at Jonathan Levine gallery in NYC and in DUMBO opening on Saturday, June 23rd. The new works are entitled "E Pluribus Venom" which means "From Many, Poison." The Levine gallery reception is from 5-9pm, and Dumbo is from 7-11pm, RSVP only. Judging from the "free cash while supplies last" and the DJ lineup, which includes Shepard, I'd say the DUMBO reception might be the one to check out. More info here.

Bansky's "Art of Worship"

Banksy in the Guardian.co.uk

Banksy just installed a porta-potty stonehedge entitled "The Art of Worship" at the site of the Glastonbury festival which takes place on the summer solstice, June 21st (which is fitting with the Stonehenge mysteries.) He's been known to put up signs around museums that say "Mind the crap.", which seems to be his message here in terms of his own art. One interesting note, it was mentioned in the Guardian article that they have an exclusive photo of the artist himself installing the work. Is he ready to be known? One of my favorite "Bansy-isms" is Nobody ever listened to me until they didn't know who I was. Hope that doesn't change.

National Gallery puts art out on the streets

National Gallery

ThisIsLondon.co.uk has an article today on the National Gallery of London taking their art out onto the streets in an effort to remind the passersby what the NG has to offer. There's 44 full scale reproductions, they'll stay up for 12 weeks, and even has a call in tour recording.

The most interesting part of this is story is the reference to Banksy. In the title of the article: "Now that's street art, Banksy", and an art critic's quip ""Anything Banksy can do, the National Gallery can do better." The Banksy reference is interesting in that it seems to indicate that it's a competitive response to his hanging his work in several museums (not to mention the tons of press he received as a result).. Banksy's museum pranks seem to be causing some serious conversations behind closed doors...is street art really becoming a competitor in providing people's art and culture needs to the point that it is hurting attendance, charitable contributions and relevance?

Joe Claus' Portrait Project

146408_21305_9d689d0b86_m.jpg
Bob at Circle A by Joe Claus.

Joe Claus is a SJSU photography student that just completed a compelling project of small business owners' portraits. (I'm in there but that's not why I like it.) I like this series because some of our most favorite people are in there....those men and women that against the mainstream, and their better judgment, are the proprietors of our favorite shops and hang outs that we frequent so we can feel connected.

Joe's "tribute to the smaller side of American business" will be one of the featured exhibits at KALEID on August 3rd along with paintings by Mary Medrano.

OMG! San Jose in the NY Times?!

It's true, be it through the back door of an article on San Jose in the Travel section, we're happy all the same that AD, KALEID, Phantom Galleries (though not by name but description) & the SoFA district (mentioned no less than SIX times) received a little ink in such a highly regarded and well read national paper. Perhaps San Jose's thriving art and culture image is at a tipping point.

This is the opening line of Josh Sen's article:
"ACRONYMS applied to up-and-coming urban neighborhoods often hint at grungy hipness, suggesting the presence of cutting-edge art galleries and underground nightclubs, with the promise of lattes and live-work lofts to come. So it is with SoFA in San Jose."

And then: "In a city that nurtures its art institutions, an underground art scene has also taken shape. Vacant buildings, which still blemish many downtown blocks, have been transformed into temporary exhibit space for local painters and sculptors, attractive place-holders until permanent tenants arrive.
The best established of these spaces, an airy, engaging gallery called KALEID, sits on South Fourth Street. Along with a collection of other downtown galleries, it stays open until 9 p.m. on First Fridays , a kind of roving art reception held on the first Friday of every month."

It's a well rounded snapshot of what San Jose is really up to lately with many worthwhile establishments getting the cred they deserve. Read the entire article here (It will appear in the Sunday, May 20th NY Times paper edition.)

"We Are the Strange" premiers at Sundance!

San Jose's M dot Strange hits the big screen tonight at the Sundance Film Festival with his feature length animation, "We Are The Strange." Mista Strange, as he's known around town, has been creating this labor-of-love for the past 3 years locked in a basement somewhere beneath the streets of San Jose. Some notable local artists that lent their talents to this incredibly creative effort include David Choe, Sean Boyles, and Mitsy Ovalles. Congratulations!

If you can't make it up to Sundance this week for one of the four screenings, fear not, your next opportunity to meet the professor of Strange himself is just around the corner at Cinequest in San Jose. Anno Domini will present an exhibit in conjunction with the festival featuring art from the making of "We Are The Strange." The artists' reception will be held on First Friday, March 2nd, 2007. See you downtown!

"We Are The Strange" a film by M dot Strange

Blue is a young girl navigating the streets of a terrifying, sinister fantasy world all alone. When she meets Emmm, a fellow lost soul, she joins him on a quest for some ice cream. Upon arriving, they realize the ice cream shop has been taken over by dark forces, and the whole city is teeming with evil. Bizarre monsters surround Blue and Emmm on all sides until Rain, a sadistic hero, arrives to rescue them and exterminate the source of the evil.

We Are the Strange is its own imaginative and immersive universe. M dot Strange spent three years painstakingly creating this film, using a range of animation techniques: traditional, stop-motion, computer, and his own unique blend of 8-bit graphics and anime, dubbed "Str8nime." The stunning visuals are complemented by a soundtrack that is both beautiful and harrowing. The end result is a freaky technocarnival ride that climaxes with a momentous battle between innocence and darkness.

WORKS San Jose moving to SoFA!

It's official...just announced today, Tuesday, December 12, 2006, that WORKS San Jose will make their new home in downtown San Jose's SoFA district. Their move will bring back to life the former ICA location at 451 South First Street. Biters Beware!

It is an ongoing debate as to whether or not unsanctioned art on the street (paste/stick ups, graff, street art, etc) is copyrightable or not. There's also a line between "inspired by," "tribute to" or "nod" and the blatant rip off of an artist or designer. It is someone's creation and skill then, permission or not, it belongs to them. Corporatations trying to attain street cred should partner with, not steal from, artists. My favorite line these companies are quoted as saying, when caught, is "oh the designer did it....we didn't know." So this is a heads up to designers and ad agencies as well.

"Make the shame more shameful by making it public" is just what YouThought We Wouldn't Notice.com does. So if you see injustices, let them know and they'll post it. And if there's a company on there that is biting artists, boycott them. The best form of activism is where, and with whom, you spend your money!

William's Great Books OPEN

We just visited a new used book store on the second floor of 330 So. Third Street in downtown San Jose. It's called William's Great Books and the owner, William Curdton, says he has 9,000 sq ft of books in storage to sell in his 800 sq ft store space (from what he told us, he has the left over inventory of the former Twice Read Books on San Fernando that closed down last year.)

There were quite a few "vintage" sci-fi books, old magazines, art books, etc. Most seemed pretty well read over, but there were a few better condition books in his glass case, and a shelf dedicated to his ebay listings. We noticed a pretty good range of prices from $1 - $40. We're happy to have him in the neighborhood and wish him the best!

Artist & Craftsman pulling out

The San Jose Merc reported that Artist & Craftsman Supply is giving up it's downtown location after three years. We are sad to see them go. In their first months they had partnered with Phantom Galleries in marketing efforts and it seemed to work... when they first opened up they had a record store opening of any of their other locations. But as the store changed managers,

we heard from many artists that they were less and less friendly and not as competitive price-wise (fewer discounts).

On the other hand, it does not seem unreasonable to ask the Redevelopment Agency for a 10-15% reduction in rent to keep a viable and much needed retail store here in the downtown core, especially when the promise of surrounding tenants has gone unfulfilled. (What's the other option? Yet another restaurant?! Another bar/club/ultra lounge? UUUgghh.)

I doubt there's any saving A&C, they've already made it clear that they want out of San Jose, and RDA probably doesn't appreciate the media spotlight on the situation so they will make no effort to concede. A&C will go about their business in other cities, and RDA will go about their business of building... well, buildings instead of communities. We're the only ones that lose in all of this.

Save the Merc!

savethemerc.gif

Recent days have brought dizzying change to the San Jose Mercury News. In quick succession, the Mercury's owner, Knight Ridder, was sold to the McClatchy Co. which has announced it intends to sell the Mercury News.

The pending resale puts the paper's ability to cover the community at risk. An owner more interested in increasing profits than in fulfilling the paper's responsibility to the community likely would impose severe cutbacks in news coverage.

Please join the employees of the Mercury News and voice your support for preserving this vital civic institution.

We encourage you to visit the Save the Merc website and Sign the Support Statement.

About World War 3
Founded in 1980 by Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper, World War 3 is the longest running zine in America. A labor of love, the annual magazine has been run by a collective of artists working with the unified goal of creating a home for political comics, graphics and stories. The rotating editorial board has included over the years along with Seth and Peter,Sabrina Jones, Scott Cunningham,Kevin Pyle,Nicole Schulman,Eric Drooker,Susan Wilmart, Christopher Cardinale,Ryan Inzana,Paula
Hewitt,Fly,and Chuck Sperry among many others. The magazine could never have survived without this collective effort and the contribution of so many other artists and writers who have donated their talents.
If we had a manifesto (which we don't) it might say if you're going to talk about changing society, a magazine's not a bad place to start.

There is a lot going on in this world that can be examined, exposed and addressed through art. World War 3 is a document of our collective history from the shadow cast by Ronald Reagan to Iran Contra, the Tompkins Square Riot, The Gulf war, 9-11 through the corruption of George W. Bush' administration. WW3 isn't about a War that may happen, it is about the ongoing wars our so-called leaders have been waging against people around the world and on our very own doorsteps.WW3 also addresses the war we wage on each other and sometimes the one taking place in our own brains. We have been publishing for 25 years and this is only the beginning.

Bike thieves strike outside A.D.

Our good friends Anabella and John had their bikes stolen just outside A.D. last night during Barron Storey's speaking event. We've posted an image of the two cruisers and description below in case you should see them over the weekend downtown or at the bike swap this Sunday.

The Red one - girl bike - has a XL sticker (like the ones that come on shirts) under the seat , the seat is very old original Schwinn/faded, the body is CANDY APPLE RED!!
The Blue one - girl bike - Is and Old English made Bike, the handle bar grips, say made in England (cream color), has a yellow sticker under it's seat too ... really old and rusty, nothing like it in SJ, that's for sure!

Please contact us with any sightings via email or the studio line 408.271.5151, and we'll pass it along. Go get 'em!

Singh sees it

Gary Singh's current "Silicon Alleys" column in the Metro talks about his high hopes for A.D. downtown. Our favorite line: "Downtown is in a constant state of remodeling and Eder, along with his partner Cherri Lakey, is moving their Anno Domini art gallery operation into the old Camera One building - a perfect return of counterculture to the SoFA district. It's about freakin' time."
We couldn't agree more.

Sony Bites LOMO

SonyRipsLomo.jpg

As any of the million plus Lomo lovers will tell you, one of the Golden Rules of Lomo is, and has always been "Don't Think. Just Shoot." It's on all of their literature and it's the title of the Lomo coffee table book. So what's with Sony ripping it off?! Guess it's easier to tap an underground cult phenomenon hoping no one will notice rather than come up with your own creative campaign. Shame on you Sony.

Translated from German via Google:

Thursday, 9 June 2005 ADVERTISEMENT NEWS homepage Sony: New advertisement and Plakatkampagne  [ 06/06/2005 ] "Don't think. Shoot." The new advertisement and poster campaign of Sony set completely on Spontaneitaet and intuition. Whether when filming, photographing or with the music down load -- to try goes studying over. A.D. Downtown

Yes, it's true. After five of the best years we could imagine in a former iron works foundry throwing monthly art happenings, Anno Domini will be moving into the former Camera One Theater building on South First Street. Thanks to friends, artists, audience and city agency folks that believe in A.D., we have finally signed a lease for the new location to bring the gallery smack in the middle of the heart of the city.

It's a passing of the torch really... in the early 1970s there was no place in the South Bay to see quality independent or international films. James Zuur, Jack NyBlom and Dennis Skaggs, aspiring filmmakers and major film fans, used to make the long drive to Berkeley several times a week to see movies like Children of Paradise, 400 Blows and Casablanca. But after a few years the drive became a bore, and in 1975 they, along with two other partners, opened Camera One in downtown San Jose. We hope to continue the legacy of art and culture that these pioneers began more than 30 years ago.

So Barron's show will be the closing of the current location (what a way to go!). The work is coming in and it's intense, beautful and you'll never forget it. So come by his opening (06.03.05), meet Barron, get inspired and reminisce about the 55 exhibits showcasing hundreds of artists from around the nation and all those DIY performers that made the trek to SJ to share their talents. We should be in the new space by the fall to start it all up again.

And what's to happen with A.D.'s current space? Well, it would be a shame to lose an art space to gain one, so we're going to launch KALEID, a new gallery specializing in local artists. You'll be hearing more from us about that soon.

Sign up for updates and news.
