An all encompassing dynamic range of sound, from minimal haunting dirge drone to maximalist harsh noise wall, created with all hand built modular synth units and tape manipulation.

Tarr is the moniker of Philip Kruse (Chicago). Using field recordings and crude electronics to create environments through audio. Along with recording and live performance, Philip also works with installations using audio along with objects and altered surroundings. In the past he has collaborated with Maureen Gubia, Patrizia Oliva, Naofumi Ishimaru (Yximalloo), Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle), Arnau Sala, and Patrick Murch.

Cornelius F. Van Stafrin III: (Los Angeles/North Carolina)


Vast sculpted noise, organic drone, or deep orchestral groans on a sinking ship, would be descriptions that would get you in the right mind set of the sounds you might expect to hear. All created with reel to reel tape machines, a harmonium, tibetan singing bowls, amongst an array of other sound experiments and hand built instruments.

Whether it's the ringing in your ears or the fabric on your body that sings every time you move, there are heaps of fugitive noises awaiting capture. One can also look at it like this: think of sounds as feelings that need to be paid attention to or else they hibernate and eventually die. That's why the sound art of folks such as Cornelius F. Van Stafrin III is so crucial to healthy living on this planet. The sound cultivator showcases found-sound audio that's slowed down, percussion that listens like a kitchen-utensil percussion ensemble, and haunted house-like piano interspersed with skin-crawling bowed cymbals. There are also plenty of meditative drone and feedback arias that sound like chirping crickets. Or are they real crickets? We're not sure. That's the beauty of it.

In addition to the South FIRST FRIDAYS art walk on June 4th, South First Street in the SoFA District of downtown San Jose will be shut down from 6pm-midnight for the 3rd Annual SubZERO Festival... a diy, artistically bent, hi/lo-techno mashup where street meets geek.

This highly anticipated event is the only of its kind in the region featuring 100 artists, performers and musicians of the subculture genre that thrives in Silicon Valley.

We're big fans of The Mumlers. They live right here in the lovely city of San Jose just like us. If you're in the bay area later this month, head over to Cafe du Nord on Friday, February 26th kickin' off at 8pm to see them during Noise Pop.

We always love when Gavin Castleton comes through San Jose and plays at Anno Domini. Here he is performing a bedroom version of his "Sledgehammer" cover using Ableton Live 8, an FCB1010 midi foot controller, an M-Audio Trigger Finger, a Wurlitzer 200A eletric piano, and a Roland JP8000. All effecting (including the vocoder which is being fed from a vocal delay aux send and the JP8000) is done in Ableton. The audio was outsourced to another computer and multi-tracked for a much improved final mix. Due to a total lack of budget (only 2 "cameras"), there are shots of earlier takes mixed in with the final take footage.
